Connection after loss.

After someone dies, we find a whole community is ready to show up for us in the short term. Food arrives. Friends and family offer to help…”just ask”. Then slowly, the support system fades away. No one want to listen to our pain and loss anymore. Friend and family are more likely to retreat, thinking we just need to “move on and get over it”.

Unfortunately, that is the belief system that has permeated thought of loss and grieving for generations. And it is absolutely wrong. I will always be sad that my mother passed away. I will always miss her. And while I know that overtime that loss will not be the focus of each day, there will never be a time when I won’t miss her when I do think about her. Our friends and family avoid our grief so that they will avoid their own feelings of grief and loss.

If you need a space to talk, a grief counselor may be the answer along with identifying those around you who can truly support you long term. If you’d like to learn more about grief counseling, reach out for a free online consultation.
